As the election results continue to settle, we’re reflecting on the emotions and responses that have surfaced across our communities. That agitation, grief, and anger are signs of how deeply we care about the state of the world and our communities. As we move through this moment together, please remember to stay in community, listen to your body, feel your emotions - and let it fuel you for the fight ahead.
While there is much for us to grieve, we must also make space to celebrate the great moments that came out of this election cycle as well. Here is a glimpse at some of the local wins our team is excited about:
This election marked the first time Portland used ranked choice voting, and we are thrilled to announce that six of APANO AF’s endorsed candidates have secured positions on the Portland City Council. A huge congratulations to Candace Avalos (District 1), Elana Pirtle-Guiney and Sameer Kanal (District 2), Tiffany Koyama Lane and Angelita Morillo (District 3), and Mitch Green (District 4)!
While Carmen Rubio did not win the seat for Portland Mayor, we are grateful that our city has successfully kept Rene Gonzalez from taking the position. We welcome Keith Wilson as the new Mayor and are hopeful for his commitment to protecting and sharing resources with our unhoused neighbors in the years ahead.
On the Multnomah County front, we are proud to announce that APANO AF-endorsed candidate Shannon Singleton defeated former Mayor Sam Adams and will represent as the Multnomah County Commissioner for District 2.
At the state level, we fought hard to protect House District 48, and we’re excited to share that Rep. Hoa Nguyen has been re-elected! As one of Oregon’s handful of Asian American State Representatives, she will continue to advocate for community care and the needs of all Oregonians.
We also want to celebrate Willy Chotzen who will represent House District 46 as a first-time Representative, and Khanh Pham, who has secured her position as a newly elected Senator, replacing Senator Michael Dembrow in Senate District 23 after his recent retirement.
These victories represent a much-needed change, and we’re confident that these new and returning electeds will be steadfast in their support of our communities.
We owe a great deal of gratitude to all our volunteers, staff, and supporters who have worked tirelessly alongside us. Your time, energy, and unwavering commitment have made this possible. Together we’ve knocked on hundreds of doors, inspired so many great conversations with community, held space for our neighbors, and generated the energy that can push us through these complex times.
Whether it’s with your loved ones, chosen family, or political kin, each of us can find meaningful ways to advocate, organize, and build the world we have long deserved. We’re excited to continue this journey with you all.
