Advocacy & Civic Engagement
Policy, Political Advocacy & Civic Engagement (PPACE).
Our political advocacy and civic engagement work is fueled by volunteers and community members. Our goal is to win concrete changes in local ordinances, state and federal legislation, on ballot measures, and through other public policy.
We couldn't do it without you!
For many years, APANO has led and supported campaigns that are transforming Oregon into a state where all people have the rights, recognition, and resources needed to thrive. But we don’t do it alone. Our political advocacy and civic engagement work is fueled by volunteers and community members.
Housed in our community organizing and leadership development programs, this work seeks to elevate issues through community engagement, policy research, voter mobilization, and grassroots advocacy coordination statewide. Our goal is to win concrete changes in local ordinances, state and federal legislation, on ballot measures, and through other public policy.
To support the programmatic, direct service work of APANO, Oregon’s oldest and largest Asian and Pacific Islander advocacy organization, APANO Action Fund (AF) was born in March of 2017. Through our partner 501(c)(4) nonprofit, our members can engage in electoral organizing for political candidates at the state and local — city, county, and school board — levels. APANO AF also brought expanded capacity for ballot measure organizing and policy lobbying at both the local and statewide levels, two aspects of advocacy in which APANO continues to engage.
Throughout Oregon’s legislative sessions and elections, APANO and APANO AF are here to support and engage Oregonians who are passionate about bringing positive change to our communities. Follow along our social channels and visit APANOActionFund.org for more information about our electoral work.
Community & Policy Research
Periodically, APANO AF offers opportunities to review demographic and policy data to help shape analysis and inform our political priorities. Through these exercises, participants can learn how to leverage research, writing skills, and data to influence policy change. To learn more and hear of opportunities to engage in this process, let us know!
Timeline
Each legislative session, APANO AF welcomes the community to join us in Salem for APANO AF’s Lobby Day. An opportunity to influence the decisions being made by elected officials about issues that affect our community, Lobby Day is a day-long event hosted at the Oregon State Capitol. There, APANO AF members use their collective stories to advance equity in meaningful conversations directly with our elected officials and their staff. These gatherings and legislative trainings leading up to Lobby Day prepare members to craft their stories and learn about the ongoing advocacy work at the capitol.
Electoral Organizing
In our nonpartisan capacity, APANO AF partakes in campaigning and organizing year round. We hope to encourage and foster effective voter turnout. We participate in political education activities around specific ballot measure campaigns and issue areas. We create messaging that will turn out and engage AAPI voters, and we do that with the support of our community showing up. Thank you for all that you do!
Join us in our efforts to bring about the world we wish to see. Partake in our outreach through voter engagement and education. We’ll canvas together, phone-bank, write letters to the editor, and partake in speaker trainings — and we’ll have some fun doing it!
